Lotuses in Thai Contemporary Painting: Symbols Conveying the Meanings of Buddhist Philosophy

บทคัดย่อ
งานวิจัย “จิตรกรรมไทยร่วมสมัยรูปบัว: สัญลักษณ์ในการสื่อความหมายเชิงพุทธปรัชญา” มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาการใช้ภาพบัวในการสื่อความหมายเชิงพุทธปรัชญาจากการศึกษาเก็บข้อมูลงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อรวบรวมและสร้างองค์ความรู้ในการสร้างผลงานจิตรกรรมไทยร่วมสมัย นำมาวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล เพื่อนำผลการศึกษามาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจิตรกรรมไทยร่วมสมัยที่แสดงออกถึงอัตลักษณ์ของตน
จากการศึกษางานวิจัยพบว่า การใช้ภาพบัวในการสื่อสัญลักษณ์เชิงพุทธปรัชญาผ่านผลงานศิลปะตั้งแต่สมัยอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน การใช้สัญลักษณ์ดอกบัวเป็นสิ่งที่สื่อในเชิงบวกมากกว่าเชิงลบ ซึ่งสัญลักษณ์ที่นิยมนำมาใช้คือดอกบัวบาน สัญลักษณ์ในการสื่อความหมายเชิงพุทธปรัชญาเพื่อใช้แสดงถึงหลักธรรมคำสอน ปรัชญาในพุทธศาสนาหรือเพื่อแสดงความความรู้สึกศรัทธาความเชื่อ ยกตัวอย่าง บัวสี่เหล่าที่เปรียบดอกบัว 4 ประเภทถึงสติปัญญาของบุคคลที่สอนได้หรือไม่ได้สามารถเข้าใจได้ง่ายด้วยความหมายนี้ ผลวิเคราะห์ผู้วิจัยได้นำองค์ความรู้ที่ศึกษามาพัฒนาการสร้างสรรค์
ผลงานศิลปะชุดสรุปนี้ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากธรรมชาติบัวเป็นภาพประทับใจมาถ่ายทอดด้วยสีสันแสงในบรรยายกาศที่ไม่มีอยู่จริง การใช้รูปทรงบัวที่มีขนาดเล็กใหญ่มาใส่ในโครงสร้างรูปร่างอิสระของเส้นที่มาจากจังหวะของใบบัวเป็นเส้นคลื่นที่ให้ความรู้สึกถึงการเคลื่อนไหว แปลกตา เป็นการแสดงออกของอารมณ์ทางสุนทรียะ ผสมกันของรูปทรงให้สอดคล้องกับพุทธปรัชญาเพื่อความสมบูรณ์ของผลงานศิลปะที่มีคุณค่าทางความงามและคุณค่าทางจิตใจในงานศิลปะรูปแบบงานจิตรกรรม 2 มิติ โดยจะนำเสนอผลงานในชุดผลงานทดลองจำนวน 2 ชุดและชุดผลงานสรุปที่พัฒนาการสร้างสรรค์
ABSTRACT
The study on “Lotuses in Thai Contemporary Painting: Symbols Conveying the Meanings of Buddhist Philosophy” aimed to: 1) study the use of lotus paintings to convey meanings of Buddhist philosophy by collecting data related to the topic, and 2) gather and contribute to the body of knowledge on Thai contemporary painting, and then analyze this so that the results of the study could be used in the creation of Thai contemporary paintings showing personal identity.
It was found that lotuses have been used as symbols of Buddhist philosophy in pieces of art from the past to present. Lotus symbols convey positive meanings rather than negative ones. A blooming lotus is widely used as a symbol to show Buddha’s teachings, aspects of Buddhist philosophy, or Buddhists’ faith and belief. For example, four kinds of lotuses symbolize four kinds of people’s intelligence. The body of knowledge received from the analysis was used to inform and develop the creation of new works.
The resulting set of art pieces was inspired by the nature of lotuses. These paintings were expressed using light and colors in an imaginary atmosphere. Small and big lotus shapes were put in a structure and shapes of free lines derived from rhythms of lotus leaves, delivering an idea of movement and astonishment. This established an aesthetic mood mixed with shapes in accordance with Buddhist philosophy leading to artistic completeness, full of aesthetic and mental value through 2-dimensional paintings. Two sets of experimental work and a set of concluding work were presented.
