Expectations of Thais towards Suvarnabhumi Airport

Abstract
The objectives of the research are to obtain general information on Thais who use Suvarnabhumi Airport such as gender, age, status, education, occupation, income, purpose for using the airport and frequency of use and to find out their expectations when using the Airport regarding convenience for getting to the airport, safety, expense, speed and convenience, facilities, physical outlook and landscape of the airport. Samples taken from 400 people over 18 who used the Suvarnabhumi Airport at least once a time. A two-stage random sampling method was carried out which included purposive sampling and convenience sampling. To collect data questionnaire was distributed. The collected data then analyzed using packaged program for the research and the descriptive statistic consisted of percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The statistic for testing the hypothesis was carried out by using the t-test with the 2 groups of samples and the F-test with more than 2 groups of samples.
The conclusion of the research showed that the majority of the respondents was female, aged between 26-33, single, graduates with a bachelor degree, state enterprise/company’s employees, monthly income of 10,001-20,000 Baht. The purposes for using the airport were for business, to work, attend meetings or seminar and for leisure at frequency of once or twice during the past 6 months. Expectation of Thais toward Suvarnabhumi Airport can be summarized are follows : for convenience in getting to the Airport, respondents have high expectation on public transport – to have airport bus, microbus and taxis available to and from the airport at all times, followed by signage – to provide signs and posters that are in order, clear, sufficient in numbers and well placed.
For safety, respondents have high expectation on sufficient number of security guards, followed by expectation of efficient warning system in case of emergencies and systematic security checks and follow up.
For expenses, respondents have only average expectation. All expenses at Suvarnabhumi are higher, from travel to/from the Airport, parking fee and cost of meals in restaurants and coffee shops.
For speed, efficiency and convenience, have high expectation placed on efficient system to check-in tickets, followed by quick, convenient and efficient systems to check-in baggage and transfer of baggage.
For facilities offered, have high expectation placed on sufficient numbers of lounges and seats for passengers on departure and arrival, followed by sufficient lighting and air conditioning systems.
For physical outlook and landscape of airport, expectation was high. Landscape at Suvarnarbhumi Airport is much better than at Don Muang Airport. However the immense size of Suvanarhbumi Airport makes it more difficult to provide / receive services. The Airport has high potential to be a regional aviation hub of Asia.
Moreover it was found that different genders have the same general expectations, different age have different expectations in general except for safety and security; different status have the same general expectations except for convenience in getting to the Airport; different levels of education have different expectations in general except for convenience in getting to the Airport and physical outlook, different occupation have the same general expectations except physical outlook, different monthly income have the same expectations in all aspects. With regards to purpose for using the airport, those who have different business purposes have different expectations except physical outlook, those who have different purposes working or attending meetings have the same expectations, those who travel for different leisure have different expectations except for physical outlook, those who travel to study at different level have the same expectations, those who have different purposes for returning home or visiting relatives have different expectations except for safety and security and physical outlook, those who travel at different frequency have the same expectation except expenses and physical outlook.
