(Finite Element Method)

Abstract

The study of the behavior of structures made from FGM composite materials is highly interesting because it takes advantage of the benefits of both types of materials. However, due to the increasing complexity of engineering problems, it is necessary to use numerical analysis methods to help analyze these issues. This research focused on the numerical analysis of free and forced vibration problems in two dimensions using the Finite Element Method (FEM).

The test problem for this research was a cellular Euler- Bernoulli beam, where the left end of the beam was supported by a hinge and the right end was supported by a roller. The beam was composed of bi- directional functionally graded materials (BDFGM), made from two materials: aluminum and zirconia. A mixture rule model was proposed to describe the variation in the volume fractions of the materials. The variation indices of the elastic modulus and density were defined to follow an exponential equation along the axial direction () and a power law along the depth of the beam (). These were expressed as functions of the beam’s position, with values ranging from 0.2 <  < 2 and 0.2 <  < 2, respectively.

The study results indicated that the first three natural frequencies of a simple cellular beam obtained from the analysis were inversely proportional to the increasing variation indices in both directions. The variation index along the depth had a greater effect on the rate of decrease in the natural frequencies compared to the axial variation index. For the time-dependent response analysis under applied force, it was found that when the axial material variation index increased, the displacement at the midpoint of the lower edge of the beam, or the beam deflection, increased slightly. However, when the material variation index along the depth increased, the deflection decreased significantly. This indicated that the variation index along the depth helped reduce beam deflection more effectively than the axial variation index.
