The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between risk and return in comparison between accounting-based approach and marketing-based approach. Additionally, the impacts and relationship directions were also examined as per the both approaches. Secondary data were retrieved from financial position statements, comprehensive profit and loss statements and closing prices of common stocks during 2011-2015. This research included two major sectors, industrial sector and service sector, which were comprised of 105 companies. Statistics used were Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression for analyses of both aggregated data and individual data. The results of hypothesis testing revealed that the relationship between risk and return based on the accounting-based and market-based approaches were quite different, resulting in differences of their coefficient’s signs and statistical significance levels. The market-based risk variables also provided different results between the industrial sector and the service sector. In regard to explanatory power, the market-based risk variables were able to explain the accountingbased return, resulting in an increase of the adjusted R2 value, whereas the accounting-based risk variables were not. This denoted that the accounting-based risk variables were not enough to explain firms’ returns. Furthermore, debt ratio and time interest earned ratio played a key role on return on assets and return on equity at the 0.01 level of significance. However, the debt ratio provided a negative relationship, whereas the time interest earned ratio provided a positive sign. VaR had a positive relationship with market-based returns at the 0.01 level of significance, which was consistent with the Capital Asset Pricing Model theory.
