Abstract

This research evaluates the potential of Hydraulic Cement (HC) as an environmentally sustainable alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in soil stabilization using the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) on a sandy deposits. The sandy soil used in this study was collected from the raw water pumping station construction site at Wat Rat Jamnong, Nong Khai province.

Sandy soil samples were mixed with HC and OPC at proportions of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% by dry soil weight, with a water-to-cement ratio of 1:1. The mixtures were cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days, before undergoing unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing to determine the unconfined compressive strength q[subscript u]  and the secant modulus E[subscript50] from the stress-strain relationships.

The results showed that both q[subscript u]   and E[subscript50] values with higher cement content and long curing periods, following similar trends. Although the OPC-treated soil exhibited slightly higher values than HC-treated soil due to differences in oxide composition, microstructural analysis revealed significant similarities in the development of ettringite crystals resulting from the hydration reactions in soils mixed with both cement types. A linear correlation between q[subscript u]  and E[subscript50]  was established and expressed as E[subscript50] =78.165 q[subscript u] . Field samples of HC-treated soil exhibited approximately 31.95% higher q[subscript u]   and 76.15 Percent higher E[subscript50] compared to laboratory results. Therefore, HC demonstrates strong potential as an environmentally friendly alternative to OPC for soil stabilization applications.
