Abstract

The objectives of this research were to: 1) determine standard criteria for allocating activity costs to product costs, 2) create a cost allocation model to allocate activity costs to product costs, and 3) study the effectiveness of unit costs for each subject group by comparing the traditional costing system and the activity-based costing system.

The population used in this study includes 3 2 units in the RMUTT organizational structure, consisting of 1 2 faculties ( divided into 9 subject groups) , 2 basic education schools, and 18 university support departments. Key informants include 98 people drawn from administrators, lecturers, and support staff from faculties, schools, and university support departments. Those informants were invited to attend the meetings to consider the management structure, their duties and responsibilities, and participate in determining activity costs and cost drivers, in order to obtain standard criteria for cost allocation. The research tools used are activity records and expense records of all departments. Then calculate using MS Excel. Statistical analysis includes percentage.

The research results showed that: 1) standard criteria for allocating costs included 30 activities, 21 cost drivers, and 5 outputs, 2) cost allocation model to allocate activity costs to product costs according to activity- based costing employed the reciprocal allocation method along with the simultaneous cost distribution technique and create a cost distribution matrix using the linear equation method with MS Excel, MMULT and MINVERSE functions as tools for calculations, and 3) the effectiveness of unit costs for each subject group by comparing the traditional costing system and the activity- based costing system revealed that traditional costing system result in higher or lower unit costs than activity-based costing systems. This is because only one allocation criterion is used, which is FTES whereas the activity-based costing system use allocation criteria consistent with service activities. As a result, costs are more consistent with actual costs as follows.
There are 4 subject groups that show lower unit costs: business administration decreased by 6,419 baht per person/ year, followed by agriculture ( 2,612) , education ( 2,129) , and engineering (837), respectively. However, there are 5 subject groups that show higher unit costs: architecture increased by 37,458 baht per person/year, followed by health science (28,260), physical science (6,436), fine arts (4,876), and humanities (2,437), respectively.
